This morning I did some reading that made me more than a little sober, from a blogger mom who I don't even know who recently lost her 12-year-old son in a flash-flood related accident. I won't go into details about the eulogy, other than it set my mind spinning. And it reinforced how lucky we are every day we get to be alive and with the people we love the most, no matter what else is going on around us or even within us. Life is a precious gift, not to be wasted. And the most important part of being in a family, whether you're a parent, child, sibling, spouse, or anything else, isn't about what you say and teach and do. It's about loving each other, no matter what, and undeniably so. Those "three little words" matter more than being right about anything. They matter more than what job you have, how much money you make, how healthy you are, what grades you got in school, how fast you get places, or all the mistakes you've ever made. If you can look at those relationships, flawed as they might be, and know without a doubt that you have love between you, then you have an anchor and a refuge in a world that would rather huff and puff and blow your house down. So let's all just take a day (or two, or three) and spend time with the people we love more than life itself, because too, too soon, these moments will pass and we won't get them back again. And I don't want any regrets, or anything left unsaid.
