Fairy Garden

I didn't get inspired until, like, yesterday to do this, and fundage is low because of all the birthday goings-on...but still, I think my fairy garden to welcome in spring turned out awfully cute.

The whole thing.  Right out of our patio was a little space that, I assume because of the giant rocks forming a barrier around it, the former tenants used to garden flowers.  So I pulled out almost all the weeds (I liked the little white flowers on the one in front, though, so I let it stay), tilled up the soil (LOTS of worms in there!), and put my pots down...the leftover flowers went on either side.

Check out this adorable park bench and the picket fence!  (Though it looks like I may have to glue them together.)

This cute little bookshelf (only $2.47) came with lots of little books, complete with titles--I stole a few for the bench and tucked the rest on the shelf in another pot...fairies can fly, after all.  ;)

I went to Dollar Tree for all the pots and dirt and such, and Hobby Lobby for the miniature things (oooooh, I wanted to buy EVERYTHING on that wall!  Next year my fairy will have a tea set in an outdoor dining area.  And she'll do a little gardening herself.  And this park bench will get a streetlamp behind it...), and got a few cheap, small flowers from Walmart.  Next year I'll save up for better stuff, but for this year, I think I welcomed Spring in today just fine.  :)

This is going to be my new Spring tradition! Or you could do this for Earth Day.  Next year I'll have Caida help me.  :)

Earth Day

The inspiration behind my own hanging herb garden--photos soon!

I usually celebrate Earth Day by keeping all the lights off in the house all day (except the bathroom--no natural light) and planting something.  It rained all day Friday (Earth Day) and the lighting was therefore awfully dark, but still.  Awesome.  I haven't yet gotten around to my amazing hanging herb garden due to funding issues, but that will be rectified this week.  I DID manage a few other fun things:

 Fun, almost free Earth Day bookmarks for family, friends, and Primary kiddos (got the idea [and an awesome free Earth Day printable] from HERE).

And our traditional "dirt pudding" (in 4-for-a-dollar plastic mini pots from the Dollar Tree) for dessert.  YUM. 

While EVERY day should be Earth Day, I love having a day set aside just to reflect on how well I'm doing at taking care of the earth that takes such good care of us.  What can we do to improve?

A brilliant little thing I found HERE.  Affordable, easy, adaptable, and travels well.

I tried a garden on some Purdue plots last summer, but it was far away and I had no motivation to go there every day.  Also, bunnies ate many of the plants before they even stood a chance.  This I could put right out on my patio, and even when we move this summer it will travel decently well.  I'm going to grow some of our more commonly-used herbs (mint, cilantro, parsley, chives...what else?) and some baby lettuce leaves so we can have salad more often.  I can easily label what is in which pouches so I'll never get confused.  I won't have to weed much at all!  Really I'll just have to look out for a good water/sun ratio and keep an eye on bugs.  I'm SOOOOOOOOO excited!
