Favorite Fonts

I've seen a lot of collections of fabulous fonts on Pinterest, and I am always so sad when they end up costing money.  As a digiscrapper/DIYer/teacher/writer/volunteer secretary, I do find fun fonts to be almost a "necessity," but there is NO WAY I'm gonna pay for something like that--especially not the high prices many cute fonts cost!  :)  Fortunately, there are LOTS of great, FREE places to download any of thousands of fonts, so I thought I'd share some of my favorite places to find them, how to download and use them, as well as some of my absolutely favorite fonts with all of you.  :)

These are my favorite FREE font finders:
www.dafont.com
http://www.searchfreefonts.com
http://www.1001freefonts.com

Let's walk through (for the technically challenged, like me) how to download & install a font onto your computer once you find one you like.  :)  It's incredibly simple, actually.  I'm sure it's relatively similar for Macs, too, but as I don't have one, I can't promise anything.
Once you've found a font you want, click the "download" button and save it to whatever folder you want--I have a folder for fonts--one installed and one TO install, and transfer them over.  :)

Your font will save as a zipped file, so you'll have to unzip it.  Just right click the little book icon and select "Extract Here."  This will save the "insides" of the zipped file in the same folder.

You should see a file that is a "truetype font" or "open type font" or something like that, usually named whatever the font is called.  Right click on it and select "Install."
It's that easy!  Your new font will show up wherever fonts are used--so in your word processors/image editing software/wherever, you will see this!

NOTE: The only downside to downloading fun fonts is that if other people don't have them on THEIR computers, they won't be able to see them, and it can easily mess up formatting of documents when they try to.  So in most cases these fonts are for personal use--if you use them, save your files as images or .pdfs, or print them out.

I use these fun fonts for cards and invitations, digiscrapping and other crafts, titles for otherwise BORING organization documents, and in just about EVERYTHING classroom-related.  Not to mention that I often like to pick a font when I write that suits what I'm writing about, whether it's a fun title for our annual newsletter or writing from different characters' points of view and wanting to distinguish them all.  So here are a few of my favorites.  I couldn't sift through the THOUSAND or so I have and narrow them down to just a handful very easily, so you'll get these in categories.

HANDWRITING FONTS: for journaling/anything where you'd want it to look semi-handwritten.

FAMOUS FONTS: For themed pages and parties, little treat labels for goodies for the kids (or husbands), and other SUPER SPECIFIC purposes.  :)

EASY-TO-READ FONTS: I use these for a few different reasons--usually journaling my digipages, though.  These are the sans-serifs and such that are mostly, well...easy to read.  :)

SCHOOL-WORTHY FONTS: Mostly having to do with kids' handwriting or learning to print/write in cursive, these fun fonts are GREAT for anything having to do with school or children.

I think I'll come back tomorrow and work on showing you the rest.  :)  After a while, looking through gazillions of fonts gives me a headache...I definitely need a break from the computer for a while.  But I hope this is useful to someone out there.  :)

State String Art (just in time for the 4th of July!)

If you're on Pinterest, chances are good you've seen some of the awesome state-themed string art around.  I wanted to make mine more red-white-and-blue, for the 4th of July mantle--I'm thinking I'll make a new one for every place Paul & I live together. :)  Anywho, it's a pretty straightforward concept, inspired by many people (The Ginger Penny Pincher, Curiously Wrought, and Andrea Arch, to name a few), but here's my take on it anyway.  :)  Aside from the final effect, which I love, I also love that this project hardly cost anything--the wood was $1.50, the paints were $2, and the nails were $1.  I had the thin string in my stash already, but it's cheap if you do have to go buy it--or you can do thread, which looks neat, too.

Sorry, I'm still figuring out Picasa and I thought I had rotated those bottom middle pictures...like 3 times. :)

1. Gather supplies--red & blue paint and paintbrushes, white string (or thread, if you want), small nails and a hammer, wood plaque and state outline that fits in it. (I made mine on the small side, 5x7, because it was cheap.)
2. Paint the wood block blue. (Let dry.)
3. Lay your outline of the state and position as you like it.  I put a nail in each of the "corners" to make it stay put as well as define my edges.
4. Hammer in nails all the way around your paper outline--when you have about an inch of straight line left, remove the paper.  I think mine were pretty close together--almost touching, really--but if you have a larger board you won't have to put them together as much.  (Or if your state is mostly straight lines...)
5. Paint a red heart in the area where you live.  Bigger is better--at least 1/3 of the width of your tall states or 1/3 the height of the wider states.  Hammer your nails around that heart, too.
6. This is the fun part!  Use a slip knot to tie your yarn around one of the heart's nails, and then go back-and-forth between nails.  You can do it kinda crazy and chaotic, like I did, or orderly, going from heart to outline to heart to outline over and over again.  Either way looks really cool, but I'm a controlled-chaos person, so I went with that.  NOTE: Most states are shaped kinda funny, so make sure you don't cross your string outside of the outline or inside the heart!  If you're doing it more orderly, you'll have to get creative about how to fill in the gaps.
7. Continue until all (or nearly all) nails have been touched.  I recommend wrapping the string around each nail as an outline at the end of it all, especially if you went for chaos--it'll help confine it a little and define the shape better.  This goes for the heart, too.  When you're happy with what you have, tie it off with a double slipknot.
8. Put it on the mantle! (Or wherever you're putting it.)  And admire your awesomeness.

Family Happenings

We are still diggin' our new car LOTS. Punky is her name. (PT Cruiser--Cruiser Bruiser--Punky Brewster--Punky)

On Saturday, we went to the Hollyhock Festival in a little neighborhood downtown.  It's basically just an excuse for the neighborhood to come together and hopefully draw in new people, trying to revive a dying part of town.  The park itself is cute, I remember Paul and I went there a couple of times when I lived only a few blocks away.   Free food (BBQ, chips, soda, ice cream), free entertainment (a singer and some games with prizes for the kids)...we didn't stay too long but it was a fun afternoon outing.  (Except for the beetle that got on my ice cream cone and wouldn't get off...and when I tried to MAKE him get off, he attached himself to my finger instead and then bit/stung me when I flicked him off...it swelled a little bit, but I was more angry at it than hurt. :)  What kind of beetle does that?

When I worked on my tee-shirt crafts, I accidentally dropped a drop of hot glue right onto my finger, straight from the barrel of the high-temp gun.  It HURT.  I got a nice, small burn-blister on my forefinger and thumb because of it.  It doesn't hurt anymore, but I usually keep it bandaged up just so it doesn't pop and then get infected.  Ah, the joys of crafting.  :)

Our puppies are as cute as ever.  Here they are, cuddling together (they do this 67% of the day):
Here is Voodoo snuggling with ME (which accounts for the other 33% of the day) when I had a migraine coming on:
Isn't she TOO CUTE?
And here is Obi, waiting patiently for "Daddy" to get home.  She knows that when 6:30 rolls around, he could be coming up to the sliding door any time, and she waits for him.  He's her favorite.  :)

That's pretty much us in a nutshell right now.  Paul works.  We do church-related things.  I go crazy trying to find things to do to fill my days as I wait to hear back about jobs for the fall, or even just to sub, because I don't love sitting at home for weeks on end.  I'm trying to enjoy the moment more, though.  I know that when I AM busy again, I'll be envying myself now.  We are never satisfied, are we?  :)  I'm getting some free babysitting and dog sitting in these last few weeks, which at least makes me feel useful.  And grateful that I can help out people who need it.  We are going to start having friends over for dinner and game nights again (we just sort of retreated into ourselves last semester, which is pretty usual for us when we get busy...one drawback, I suppose).  We are hoping to go up to Chicago for the 4th of July, which will be pretty fun!  At least a nice change of pace...

Anyway, life is grand.

Tee Shirt Projects!

Well, I know I *PROMISED* pictures up a few days ago, but since no one came to my craft night and I had a migraine anyway and we've been having internet problems and LIFE HAPPENS, you just had to wait 'til now. :) I'm going to make this short and sweet, and just put up a few pictures with links to the tutorials I found in case you ever want to make some of your own. :) Happy crafting!

Produce bags for the farmer's market!  I LOOSELY followed the directions HERE (but I used hot glue instead of a sewing machine...) and I'm really digging the crocheted version she's got, too.

A fun little tee-shirt scarf.  Got the directions HERE, although mine didn't turn out quite like theirs did.  Still pretty cool.

My FAVORITE project (even though it took like 2 1/2 hours), this awesome tee-shirt scarf.  Directions HERE.  I loved the way my light turquoise-gray-black combo turned out.  :)

I also cut out my Rudolph graphic from a Christmas tee that is (and has been for years) too small to wear.  I'm gonna frame it and use it as a Christmas decoration this December!

I did this one earlier, but I was going to teach others how to do it: a cute little knotted headband.  :)
Directions HERE.

Other tee-shirt projects I'm going to tackle soon:

This isn't exactly the picture, but I'm definitely going to make some dog toys with the scraps I have left over AFTER all my other projects.  :)  There's a tutorial HERE, that twists instead of braids.
I still wanna make some tee shirt bracelets...you just need duct tape, a big water bottle, and tee shirt scraps!  I will definitely be making some of these.  Directions HERE.

I REALLY love this little hoola hoop rug (directions HERE), and I've decided I'm going to wait until I have more red, white, and black tees to cut up so I can make it match my kitchen stuff.  But I WILL do this this summer, and I'll share a pic as soon as I do.  :)

I'm also gonna turn anything left over (I have TONS of tees to cut up yet) into yarn, using the tutorial HERE, to make into other fun things in the future.  I know the directions aren't by the same person as the picture--I couldn't find the original tutorial I'd saved (that was before Pinterest), but the directions are exactly the same pretty much anywhere you look.  :)

Happy Father's Day!

I wanted to do something small but fun for Paul for Father's Day, and I saw variations of this idea years ago (even before Pinterest, *gasp*). Thought it was cute, a "pop" themed gift basket. Even men with fur-babies get gifts on Father's Day, right? (p.s. I think even husbands without pets totally count. :)
They love their daddy. :)

Anyway, back to the simple basket. There is some pop (IBC, of course), popcorn, blow pops, pop tarts, pop rocks, a ring pop, and some party poppers. Breakfast was lemon poppyseed muffins, and for dinner we had popcorn chicken, jalapeño poppers, and Popsicles for dessert.

I also wrote a few (5) little love notes on the back of origami t-shirts (tutorial HERE) and hid them around the house for him to find.

We even got to chat with my Dad for an hour or so at our place, and we tried calling his dad but couldn't get through.  I went to bed before he did, so I don't know if he got a hold of him or not...
Hope your Father's Day was as awesome as ours!

Lots of random thoughts today

I don't particularly have anything on my mind, or anything fun and crafty to show, I just feel like blogging.  Isn't that weird?  Why would I feel compelled to write when I have nothing to say, especially since I don't post every day anyway?  Maybe it has something to do with being in a procrastinating mood--I really don't feel like being productive at all today.  So, yet again, you'll be getting lots of randomness.  Sorry that's mostly what this blog is anymore.  But I won't promise that will change.  :)

Tomorrow, though, I PROMISE, I will post crafty stuff, because tonight is my first ever craft club night!  I have no idea how many people are coming--not many, I think, because babysitters are hard to find (especially if dads are busy)...and one interested lady is out of town and another has a grandma in seriously ill condition today and maybe even with LOTS of notice Thursdays are just not as good nights as people thought they'd be.  But that's okay.  I got my hint o' lime chips and black bean and white corn salsa (DIVINE) and even if no one else shows up, I've got a half dozen old, ratty tee shirts I'm going to transform into something beautiful and useful tonight.  :)  That has me excited.

I got to babysit for my old neighbors today.  It's so fun to see kids grow up.  It's also fun to see how much time FLIES when you're having fun, especially with children.  Two hours zip right on by when you have a swingset and a fenced in back yard!  I can't wait 'til we have a reason to not be in an apartment anymore.  Lots of positive childhood memories came floating back today as I played with the boys, and it made me not just nostalgic but a little yearning, too...but not in a bad way.  :)

I'm such a SHIPPER.  It's funny.  Growing up with seriously lacking dating experience, I always thought I was a shipper just because I was living vicariously through these characters, but it turns out that even after being happily married for 3 years I'm as big a shipper as ever, maybe even MORE so.  I just love LOVE.  I can't help it.  I love being in love (especially on the good days) and I love watching other people--real or imaginary--falling in love and staying there (even though it is HARD).  Falling in love doesn't make all the conflict or the problems go away, but it does make it worth it.  I like that people are beginning to shy away from the "Moonlighting Curse" (don't even get me started on that one) and we're getting to see more of the "after happily ever after" part of the love stories on TV and in books even.  I love seeing how love changes people.  I'm so glad that most of my entertainment, in any medium--romantic comedies, dramedies, action, or sci-fi, it doesn't matter--put the people I want to be together...together.  :)  Even if it's the last 15 minutes of a 10-year series (ahem, JAG)...I get so invested in characters and it's nice to imagine happy endings.  I don't think it's naive of me to want happy endings for everyone.  Anyway, along comes Stargate SG-1 (one of my favorites, I'm rewatching just my favorite Sam & Jack episodes these days as I get my chores done) and ruins my almost perfect streak of satisfaction.  MAN ALIVE, THOSE TWO ARE SO FRUSTRATING!  I totally get it, I really do, but even at the end of the series, everything is implied, everything is subtext, and I am just not a subtext girl anymore.  I want them to say out loud and make official things that they only ever could in an alternate reality/alternate timeline/head injuries/memory stamping/WHATEVER...aka I want it to be REAL and STATED and I just wish, even though everyone pretty much already knows they ended up together after the series, that they had come out and SAID SO.  Or showed so.  Without anything really good making it only as far as the cutting room floor.

*End of rant.*

My "babies," my puppies, are so stinkin' cute sometimes.  :) They know what they want/need when they want it--especially attention and affection--and they know exactly what to do to get it, too.  When I'm on the computer or my phone too much and Voodoo is needing me to stop it, she literally just crawls right in between of me and the computer/phone/whatever until I have to stop and give her that attention--always so CUTE, too.  Obi is kinda the same way.  She knows when we are upset and, especially when we yell at her, she knows exactly how to calm us down.  She sits (or goes on her bed, if the door is open), and does exactly the move that Bolt learned to do in that movie--head down and tilted, ears back, eyes looking up all cutely, paws crossed sweetly, as if to say, "I'm just a defenseless, language-less little angel, why are you getting so upset?"  And she is SO FORGIVING.  The second you spray her or stop yelling she immediately runs right up and pushes her nose under your hand and makes amends.  She is SO HUMAN.  And she's a better one than me sometimes.  Voodoo is getting there, although she's more puppy than human right now.  But Obi is such a PERSON, I forget sometimes that she is in fact a dog and not my child.  And Voodoo is my baby, for sure.  :)

I have been REALLY good about eating healthy this last couple of weeks...except not really.  I mostly eat fresh fruits and veggies, with a little raw nuts or granola cereal to give it all some staying power.  It's amazing how much lighter I *feel* even if I haven't lost any actual weight.  Then along comes my dear, adoring, supportive husband, who wants to spoil me with chocolate, and I can't look at these and NOT eat:
A lot of people don't like these, but they taste just like Frango, and I LOVE them!

*Sigh* Dieting would be easier if he needed to get skinny, too.  It's WAY HARD to cook/eat well when one of you needs to lose and the other needs to gain (in a healthy way, not just eating fried foods).  It's even harder to figure out how to do it without upsetting the delicate balance of either of our bodies--too much of an allergen or citrus and his body is out for a few days...too much "healthy" stuff and (aside from the COST of it all) he never feels "full."  And with me, I can handle a stomach ache just fine, but stomach problems lead to back problems which lead to all-over problems.  Not to mention my emotional journey and spiritual clarity seem to heavily revolve around the foods I eat lately and the hormone imbalances that an imbalanced diet creates.  I'm not trying to complain, and I hope I don't offend Paul with this post like I have with others in the past.  (I apparently need to censor my posts from now on to make sure this is all about ME and not HIM.)  I'm just sayin'.  I wish *I* had more self-control, because those M&Ms didn't last more than a couple of hours.  And I had done so well!  At least it all averages out to less calories than before, still!  :)  I don't want to be a crazy person and cut out food I love, not even chocolate, but I gotta find a system that works for me, knowing how easily I give in to my cravings.  And I gotta find out how to get self-discipline when you don't have any.

I have been struck lately with the ridiculousness of my delusions of independence.  Really.  I was washing the dishes a couple of days ago and thinking about how much Paul and I are trying to live providently and wanting to improve some bad habits from yesteryear and how nice it would be if we were truly debt free, and that is all GOOD.  Even commanded by our Church leaders and recommended by worldly ones.  I'm not in any way knocking the desire to live within our means or to be able to provide for our families in the Lord's way.  I also have a really hard time asking for help, sometimes because of pride and sometimes because I have no idea what I want in the first place, but I have this fantasy of never needing anyone else for my own happiness ever again--to create in myself happiness independently of anyone else.  But "independent" is totally a wrong word for all of it.  I can't imagine that anyone in this whole entire world is truly independent, and anyone who REALLY tries for it is either very alone or very exhausted.  Just think about it.  What if, as my friend Jamie once asserted, we had all lived on our own little planets and had to do it ALL for ourselves--food, clothing, shelter, energy, happiness, pleasure, growth, learning, beauty, and every other good thing this life has to offer...can you imagine?  Even if you're not religious and you can take God out of the equation (which I can't), you still need people.  That's why we have families and friends and division of labor.  I'm so glad we're not all on our own.  We truly are all beggars.  Isn't that comforting?

Wax museums are creepy.  But I still wanna go to a good one.  :)

These are the kinds of things on my mind today.

Crocheted Baby Converse!

Remember this sneak peek a couple of weeks ago?

Well, here is the full reveal!  :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this awesome {FREE} crocheted baby Converse pattern by Suzanne Resaul over at Ravelry!
(You can tell which was my first shoe ever since my black stripes weren't as even then...I learned as I went along.  :)

I've had a LOT of fun lately crocheting baby shoes for my many pregnant friends.  :)

I love all the bright colors you can make.

I love that it can be for boys
paired up with the football baby cocoon for a newborn boy gift!

or girls.
nothing says girlie-girl like pink & purple Converse with flowers in the background!

I love that the pattern is FREE and adorable and so, so tiny!!!  Small things are always cuter.  :)  I seriously smile, and even giggle a little to myself with glee, when I look at these.  Especially when they weren't finished yet:
Don't they just make YOU smile?  :)

I will say, I struggled to follow the directions (maybe it was just me), so no two shoes are exactly alike.  (That just adds to the handmade charm, right? :)  Also, the beginning is a little challenging as you start since it's all so tight, but by the end it's MUCH easier.  AND, I didn't have the hooks she said to have, so I used .25 mm smaller for each...which works out since they are BABY shoes!  (Maybe sometime I'll try to adapt the pattern to MY SIZE feet...I could use some cool house slippers. :)  The first shoe took me 6-7 hours from start to finish as I tried to figure out what she meant in each step, but by the end, after I figured it out, it only took me 2 1/2-3 hours for each shoe.  So if you're a crocheter, give them a shot!  :)  You won't regret it!

(And, in case you missed the first two links, you can find the pattern HERE!)

Happy crafting!
