10 Things Tuesday: Milk Cartons!

I've already done milk JUGS, but milk or juice cartons are a whole 'nother animal!  Since Paul is lactose intolerant, we have go through one of these every week or so...and if we get cheap juice, we have even more!  Before you go recycling those cartons, take a look at these ideas for recrafting them instead!

10.  For the birds!  You can make a birdfeeder AND a birdhouse out of these old cartons!  How cool is that?

 9. The first thing I thought of was actually small houses/churches/towns...check out these mini churches!

8.  You can turn them into gift boxes!
 7. Turn them into luminaries!
 6. FamilyFun has this great idea to turn those old cartons into snack containers...looks easy and great to me!
 5. Mailboxes!  Decorate and cut...easy as that!

4. I *LOVE* the simplicity of this idea--a masking tape dispenser!  Who doesn't need something like this?  :)

3.  Make some felt monsters!  The felt is particularly great because you can just make the face pieces and mix-and-match like a Mr. Potato Head doll. :)

 2. Check out this easy tossing game!  Improve your hand-eye coordination with a few cartons wrapped in pretty paper and taped/glued together!

1. Vases!  You can use them as-is, or cut them down and decorate however you want.  Free vase!

BONUS IDEA: Milk/Juice Carton WALLET!  FamilyFun has a tutorial and printable pattern HERE...it's kinda awesome!!!
Which one is your favorite?  I think I love the wallet...it would be great for "milk money" for my niece!  I can't wait to go get started.  Happy crafting!

10 Things Tuesday: Calendars!

It's my hubby's birthday!  Happy birthday, Paul!  I've been eye-ing the calendar for the last MONTH in anticipation...so, I thought to m'self, what can I use that calendar for when the year is over?  Here are 10 things to do with your old calendars!

10.  Make them into bookmarks!  These are cute Valentine's gifts, or you could alter them for just about anything.
 9. Make a countdown or advent calendar!  Naptime Crafters made this beautiful calendar with a calendar and cookie sheet, among other things.  :)

 8.  Make your own envelopes/notecards!  (Tutorial HERE)
 7. Frame some of your calendar pictures!  Chances are, if you bought the calendar, you love something about the pictures!  Why not save them for years to come?
 6. Make some pretty magnets out of your magazines...
 5.  ...or Mod Podge them onto just about ANYTHING and you'll have an instantly beautiful handmade craft!
 4.  Use them as packaging to keep your fragile things safe and whole!
 3. Use as placemats!  The pictures could be awesome, or you could flip them over and give each person a month--great conversation starter!
 2. Turn those pretty pictures into PUZZLES!  Just glue/mod podge the picture onto cardboard and cut out puzzle shapes...free recycled game/craft for your kids!
 1. Use as wrapping paper for your birthday/holiday gifts.

Hope something here grabbed your attention!  If not, remember, it's PAPER...it can be recycled!  :)  Happy crafting!

10 Things Tuesday: Rocks!

More natural crafts/decor are coming your way!  Today we are looking at ways to use rocks.  Check it out!

10. Make pretty letter and punctuation rocks that your kids can spell with!
 9.  "Pet Rocks" take on a whole new dimension with some of these Martha Stewart creations!

 8. Bookends!  What a great FREE bookend idea!  I'll have to do this--both Paul and I are big book lovers, so of course we need like a million of them!
 7. Make a pretty rock clock!
 6. Decorate with rocks--in vases/hurricanes, or on things...this website has a lot of great ideas for turning old, boring rocks into fabulous decor!

 5. Make a cheap (free) set of dominos!  :)  Very cool and natural looking!
 4.  Probably goes with the decor theme, but I love these handmade rock doormats!  Get some rubber matting, cut down to size, and glue on some rocks!
 3.  What about Halloween decorations, like funky eyeballs or easy, knife-free jackolanterns?!

 2.  Hopscotch!  Mmm...I need to go play this like RIGHT NOW and relive my childhood!
 1.  Make jewelry!  Especially if you get a rock polisher...my littlest brothers got one and they LOVE it, it makes even dull rocks super pretty!

BONUS IDEAS!
* Turn them into magnets, either as-is or painted and assembled to make cute things!
 * Make more traditional pet rocks!  So funny on this little sofa!  :)
*Make a rock playset for your backyard!  FamilyFun shows you how!
 * Look at this cute Valentine's Day/"just because" gift...because you rock!
 *  Of course, you can always make a zen garden for your desk, end table, or by your bed!

Wow, I'm sure SOMETHING here caught your eye...rocks are everywhere, and these ideas...well...rock!  So, what's your favorite?  Let me see what you create!

No more blogging for a while.

I'm so very sick.  Throat is swollen so far I can't hardly breathe and hurts so bad I can't swallow, even with hot drinks.  Dizzy and disoriented.  Weak.  Chills and hot flashes.  And just tired of trying to keep up on the blog when I have soooo many other things to do right now in my life.  Just taking a break for a while.  I'm sure you'll miss me. (Hahaha.)  But I'll be back...when I can manage it again.

Mmm...Monday! Crockpot Ginger-Honey-Citrus Chicken Soup!

Paul and I are both fighting off sickness these days.  Nothing major--sniffles, tickles in throats, sinus pressure--but we certainly haven't felt 100% in a while.  It seems like this happens every time the seasons change and cold/flu seasons start up!  Thankfully, we're getting into cooler weather and autumn flavors, many of which are not only YUMMY and my favorite, but that are also super good for you, too!

I make us some hot water/lemon/honey or a ginger/lime/honey infusion when we're not feeling good. I always cook with lots of onions.  And who doesn't love the comfort of a good, home-cooked chicken noodle soup when they're sick?  Do you want to know some of the good things these do for you?

Honey--natural antiseptic, boosts immunity through antioxidants, helps digest fat stored in the body,  soothes sore throats, and is a mood booster (a spoonful helps boost the production of seratonin in your brain).  Of course, it's a sugar, so don't overdo it...but honey is pretty awesome!
Lemons/Limes--Lemons are naturally antibacterial, antiviral, and help cleanse the liver.  Also, lots of immunity-boosting micronutrients, like Vitamin C, calcium, and magnesium. Limes are kinda the same--more vitamin C than even lemons, and they have potassium in them (which is good for your kidneys and muscles).
Ginger--great for upset stomachs/digestion, warming you from the inside out, and great in baths when you want to sweat out some toxins from your body.
Onion--anti inflammatory (helps decrease bronchial spasms or inflamed sinuses)
Carrots--vitamin A, of course--and a bunch of other vitamins.  Also, good for your skin.
Chicken--protein. :) I never feel like eating much meat or dairy when I'm sick (which is good--dairy and processed grains create mucous that you don't want when you're fighting sinus issues), but this melt-in-your-mouth shredded chicken gets you lots of good-for-your-body protein, in a hearty but not a heavy way.

Lots of things that are good for you.  So I combined them all into a crockpot soup. :)

Here's how:

Ingredients:
3 c. vegetable/chicken broth, or 3 c. water with 2 bouillon cubes.
1/2 large or 1 whole medium/small onion, chopped in slivers.
1/2 lemon OR 1 whole lime, peeled and chopped in slivers.
honey, enough to drizzle twice (about 1/4 c, at least)
fresh ginger, 2 different chunks about the size of your thumb
4 medium-large carrots, peeled and sliced into medallions
3 boneless skinless chicken breasts

Directions:
1. Pour broth or water and bouillon into crockpot.
2. Sprinkle half of your onion slivers around the bottom of the crockpot.  Layer all the lemon slices on top.
3. Chop finely or grate one of the ginger chunks and add it to the mix.
4. Drizzle lightly with honey.
5. Put chicken breasts in crockpot broth/lemon/onion mixture.
6. Chop the other chunk of ginger finely and sprinkle on top of the chicken.  Add remaining onion slivers and all carrots on top.
7. Drizzle again with honey lightly.

Allow to cook on low setting for about 6-7 hours, or until the chicken is tender enough to pull easily with a spoon.  Shred chicken and serve soup warm!

Makes 3-4 servings (you CAN serve this with noodles or rice...it's really good that way!).

Enjoy, and stay healthy this autumn/winter!

Sunday Thoughts

I'm not a good member missionary.  Mostly because I don't get out enough right now to even know a lot of people who aren't LDS much.  Except for people I already met, and my family (less active), and that's a tough battle to fight.

We got briefed today during our church meetings on the "I'm a Mormon" media initiative by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is coming to our area! I'm excited.  I don't have to know these people, just share my life and my testimony with them in love.  I don't have to knock on their door--they can knock on mine.  Even *I* can do that!

I love our Church and the inspired prophets who lead it!  I really do.  And now I feel empowered just a little more today.  Stay tuned for my experience creating a mormon.org profile!  :)

Show Off Saturday

I am not really in a showing-off mood.  But here are a few things I did this week that were out-of-the-ordinary.

I worked on my portfolio.  I also made pumpkin carrot cupcakes.

I got everything (almost, anyway) that I need for Paul's birthday, 2 weeks away!  I still have to paint the flannel throws and a handful of other things, but I have at least BOUGHT almost everything I need...and today I finished up the goodie bags. :)  Our costumes are awesome, too, by the way.

I finished Caida's costume! She's gonna be a rock queen bee.  Can't wait to see her in it!
The headpiece is a tiara ($1 from Dollar Tree) and black pipe cleaners/pom poms (already in my stash).  The yellow shirt and black skirt I got from Good Will for about $1.50/piece.  The black tee shirt, cut into ribs (it'll look way better once she wears it) was a $2.50 tee from Walmart.  And I accented everything with a yellow feather boa I got for $4 from Hobby Lobby.  She'll wear it with black tights and THIS:
I bought this at Dollar Tree, also, and tried spray painting it.  I don't think it's going to work too well, though--the original orange is coming through too much still! So, I may go buy some cheap, thin yellow fabric for $1.50/yard from Walmart today.  Which brings the total of this outfit to: $13!
$13 is more than I had planned on spending, honestly, but it's still way better than the $30 queen bee dress she wanted from the mall...and the yellow shirt and black skirt can go into her wardrobe when all is said and done (I just used safety pins to pin that boa on).  Dual purpose = worth it!

I also practiced no-heat ways to curl my hair this week.  Specifically, with a sock and a headband.  Here's with the sock (a more natural wave-type curl):

And here's with the headband (more vintagey, especially if you brush it out):

And another time, not just overnight but all day AND all night with just-out-of-the-shower hair instead of a dampness:

My hair is thin and straight and boring, so this is fun to do sometimes.  And fast (sock took me 5 minutes, hairband took me about 10).  Want to learn how?  I'll share the video links. ;)

Also, we are now at 48 days since we told management about the leak in our bathroom.  15 days afterwards, they finally came and cleaned it out.  Here's where we're at today.
This is our unfinished bathroom ceiling.

This is the stuff they leave everywhere. (And McDonald's trash.)

This is our bathroom closet...after banging around in it off and on for an hour, I'm still not sure what they actually did...

They had just spray-painted over the rotting door frame...it's already cracking again.  And you can see black marks from various tools and ceilings and such...they haven't painted yet.
On top of that, they knocked down our towel rack when they tore down our ceiling, and haven't even started talking about putting a new one back up yet!  We've decided not to pay rent until they fix it, since it's WELL past the 30 days we legally have to give them according to the lease.  Of course, once we told them that, someone was here the next morning to fix it...but they didn't actually do anything, even though they came in and out four times over the course of 5 hours, so I'm guessing maybe the end of October it'll be done?  Oh well.  No rent this month!  Yay!  And if they try to evict us, we'll contest it in court.  I think we'd win.

That's my week in a nutshell.  :)  What have YOU been up to?
