Another month, another round of digiscrapping freebies!

For those of you who are interested in digiscrapping freebies, you may remember I mentioned a while back that there are blog trains and more each month.  A blog hop or blog train is where you start at one blog which leads you to another, and another, and another...and each stop along the way gives you FREE STUFF that all coordinates together!  I call these my "MEGA Kits" because I end up with SO MANY pieces.  Check them out!

For example, here are some great ones for August 2012:

LDS BLOG TRAIN BLOG: ARMOR OF GOD

STUFF TO SCRAP: FARMER'S MARKET

DIGISCRAP FORUM: CLOWN WEEK

ALSO, if you "like" digiscrappers on facebook, many of them give a free kit away each month, as well.  Some of my faves (though not all, just off the top of my head) are Word Art World by Jennifer, Connie Prince Digital Scrapping, Pretty in Green, etc.  :)

I LOVE the 1st of the month!

Happy scrapping!

The Ugly, the Bad, and the Good.

I'd say "the good, bad & ugly" but the truth is this post is probably going to go backwards.  I'll try to follow it up the negative with the good later, to leave you all on a happy note.  :)

THE UGLY

Coveting is my biggest sin these days, I think.  I try REALLY hard to count my own blessings and to be happy for others in their successes, but lately I have just had way more twinges of envy (and subsequent frustration, impatience, etc.) than I normally would.

I realized in the car yesterday that trying to find a teaching job is a WHOLE LOT like trying to get pregnant.

At least for me.

1. Both feel completely elusive to me right now.  Which is frustrating because I have received, time and again, OVERWHELMING spiritual confirmation about both.  Waiting on the Lord's timing SUCKS SOMETIMES!  I'm so not good at it.
2. Both teaching and parenting are a LOT OF WORK.  And require a lot of preparation.  And prayers.  And, apparently, patience and timing.  And there is a lot of skill overlap.  Frankly, I doubt I'd be any less stressed even if I finally got what I wanted, because I'm me and I suck sometimes and we can ALWAYS find something to complain about.
3. There are substitutes in the waiting place--like subbing/babysitting/serving in the community/church that help alleviate some of the ache of waiting...but they are NOT THE SAME. THE CHILDREN ARE NOT YOUR OWN.
4. On a good note, subbing/serving children is easier.  You get to play/have fun with LOTS of children in the good times for a short while and then give them back to the people they belong to at the end of the day, for someone else to deal with the long-term stuff. :)
5. Hearing of other people's successes in either field gives me the EXACT SAME TWINGES.  A WHOLE lotta happiness for the person sharing the good news, but also a whole lotta sadness for myself.  Pity party, as Clair would say, "TO THE MAX!"  This is ESPECIALLY true for newlyweds who get pregnant and for just-graduated friends who found a job right away.  And, interestingly, this is NOT TRUE AT ALL for my friends who have had to wait.  I'm SINCERELY, un-enviously happy for my friends who have had to STRUGGLE first before being blessed with children and jobs.  I know it's not fair of me, but there it is.  Why do I feel like some people deserve happiness and other's haven't worked hard enough for the blessings yet?  Like that's how the Lord works!

I'm struggling, people.

THE BAD

I've had a lot of conversations with some of my single friends lately who are as anxious about finding a soulmate as I am about all of my own problems.  And there was a lot of "you just don't remember what it was like" kind of talk, and it was REALLY frustrating, because I just wanted to shake them and tell them that being married doesn't fix everything, that you can still get lonely (even though I know it's not the same), and that we all have waiting periods, trials, and things that don't go your way or according to your plan/timetable regardless of whether you're single or married, a mom or just a mom-at-heart, rich or poor, healthy or not, and that the important thing is to count your blessings, do what you can with what you have, and lean on the Lord to get you where He wants you to go, because THAT is what will make you happy.  And then I got REALLY frustrated with myself, because I could feel the Lord saying all those exact same things to me, but I AM SO SICK OF HEARING IT!  I'm sick of even the best-intentioned people telling me that things will happen when the Lord wants it to and that there are all sorts of opportunities now.  I'M SICK OF WAITING!  And then I hated myself a little more, but at least I was more compassionate afterwards.

Man alive, am I struggling.
And there are so many things I want to do differently but don't even know how to get started.

And Caida's not doing well.
And money, and blah blah blah...once you get started on the bad, you can really go on for quite a while, huh?

THE GOOD

1. I am, relative to many people in the world, still quite healthy.  And I'm improving some bad habits to become even healthier.  Yay for progress, however slow and unquantifiable it may be!  :)
2. Talking with people and struggling with these and so many other things I haven't even gotten into has really helped me come to understand "the human condition" and be a WHOLE LOT LESS judgmental than before.  I've come to understand the universality of heartbreak of losing even the things you never found in the first place, of our own weaknesses, and of our incredible potential.  We really can make our lives what we want of it--not by the things we have or have happen to us or even what we can do ourselves, all the time, but by what we ARE and how we RELATE to others and WHO WE TURN TO in our waiting places.  I feel a kinship to humanity that makes a lot of other problems feel really insignificant by comparison.
3. I really did marry my best friend and, for all of our faults and shortcomings and human-ness, we are happy together and that is SUCH A BLESSING!  I love the days when I am particularly reminded of that.
4. I still haven't given up hope.  This is a strange thing to me.  Part of me wants to give up, because it's painful to hold onto a dream that you feel is just slipping away for so long.  Not to mention sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on other opportunities by holding on to what I want so badly.  But even with the pain I still believe in good things to come and something whispers in me, with every monthly "visit" or every email/phone call, "This could be it!"  And I like that about myself.  I never want to be the kind of person that stops hoping, especially when I've had the Lord confirm that I should do so.  Maybe not now, maybe not even in the next few years, but GOOD THINGS ARE TO COME.  And not just in an eternal scheme of things.  THIS LIFE is meant to be enjoyed and, by golly, there will be things to enjoy for me!  I can feel it in my bones.
5. Even my jealousy has taught me something of what I want out of my own life, love/marriage/relationships, career, and more.  The people I envy have given me something to aspire to.  And I'm getting better about it...slowly...
6. IT RAINED!  A few times, and yesterday it was even longer than a 10-minute downpour!!!  Prayers and fasting really do work!  Heavenly Father really does hear us!  Our stake, and then our entire state, each had a special fast last month for rain, and it is so FUN and REWARDING to see them come to fruition!
7. MY GREAT GRANDMA'S 100th birthday celebration is this month!  WOOHOO!  If I make it to 100...whew.  Just think about it.  :)  Can't wait to see family and party it up in celebration of such a MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT!
8. I LOVE living in the information age.  I love having Google at my fingertips, and Pinterest for inspiration, and having innumerable books and social media and educational TV and SO MANY WAYS TO LEARN!  I love knowing things and learning new things.  I love the (maybe false) sense of security I feel when I need a good, healthy recipe with a limited number of ingredients, or an idea on how to teach sharing time some week or other, or when I'm wondering what friends/family are up to, and BAM!  There it is on some screen or another.  When we use these tools to better ourselves, they can be SO MUCH FUN!  (Unfortunately, I'm also easily distracted...so I'm still working on using these tools for good.  :)
9. The few friends I have are amazingly good to me.  They are so patient with me, so forgiving, so light-hearted where I am not, so encouraging and willing to help in any way.  I've been especially grateful for old and new friends lately as I struggle.  It's so wonderful to know I'm not alone in it all.  Friends rock!  So thanks, because if you've read this whole thing, you are definitely a friend to me!
10. WHERE THERE IS LIFE, THERE IS HOPE.  This is my mantra at the end of the day, when I don't know if I even want to wake up the next day and do it all over again.  We can always repent of our sins and weaknesses and become better each day.  Every day holds new chances for learning, growth, and blessings.  You really do never know what tomorrow will bring.  Isn't that amazing?  Isn't life an ADVENTURE?

Charissa's 28th Birthday!

I didn't take many pictures of the party, but I got LOTS of pictures of the cake.  Go figure.  :)

The inspiration...super easy, in concept!  Round cake (layered), frosted slightly, stick pairs of kit kats around it, dump some M&Ms in the middle, and use a cute ribbon to tie it all together.  VERY quick cake.  :)

The chocolate-free version (Charissa doesn't eat chocolate...so I had to use white kit kats & reese's pieces)

The table spread

Blowing out the candles!

They're a little tricksy...not *quite* trick candles, but they may as well have been.

Hopefully her present will come soon and I can show you what it was.
I can't believe my LITTLE sister is 28!  I'm really getting older, aren't I?  :)

UPDATE 7/31:
Her present came in.  It only took about 45 minutes to install everything.  :)  Thankfully, she LOVED it!

Wednesday: relaxed with puppies
Thursday: froze bananas to make ice cream later
Friday: helped Lindsey pack & move & clean

Sunday: rested and ate yummy food.

My dream classroom

With school starting in two weeks or so, I've been dreaming about finally getting a "YES!" and having my own classroom.  But then the reality of putting together a classroom that is warm and welcoming and well-thought-out in two weeks overwhelms me, no matter how much help and support I may get!  So I've been collecting supplies and doodling/daydreaming about how I want to put everything together, and have just BARELY started actually making things, so that if I'm miraculously hired I won't be doing everything last-minute.

I debated about having a classroom theme.  I know it's trendy right now in education to have classroom themes, groups of students instead of rows, activity centers that are student-led, etc., but I'm a bit of a traditionalist in many ways and I have much more success when I do things in ways I'm comfortable with.  Not that I'm against any of these things inherently, I just don't see them done in ways that maximize students' potential.  And, back to the THEME, I can't imagine being locked into one theme and one theme only for a whole school year--assuming I have the money to change it up next year!  But something has been pulling at me for a while and I finally gave in to the trend.  All my decor is starting to shape around the most FUN THING EVER to be a theme for kids (and grown-ups!)--LEGOS!

Because, seriously, who doesn't love LEGOs?

Here are SOME of the pictures that served as my inspiration, both for decor and learning activities (yes, almost all were found via Pinterest!):

LEGO storage from The Container Store
LEGO clock from Chocolate Mint Crafts on Etsy

LEGO lamp by Jen Hanlon Ash Photo on Etsy
EVERY ROOM ON THIS HOUZZ SITE but especially this one:

LEGO soap by Simply Sara
Awesome LEGO babyfood jars from CRAFTZINE (I'd use these on student desks as incentive holders, etc.)
LEGO WORD WORK!
by Filth Wizardry

from the Kent Chronicles...LEGO addition!
LEGO area/perimeter by E is for Explore!
The possibilities are endless...and it's super easy to find red, yellow, blue, and green oganizational supplies and decor items, etc.

This is a START to my dream classroom...much more to come!

July 19--Gumball Conversation Starters
July 20--New mantle
July 21--Joni's baby shower!  (Also, Mom's moving day and Pete & Laura's BBQ!)
July 22--Campfire for sharing time in primary!

Quick Lil' Campfire

Is your little corner of the world on a fire ban like us?  Do you have a camp-in date night planned, or just want a safe faux campfire for your littles to play with?  Are you a teacher and want a "campfire" for your morning meetings or writers to share their stories around?  Here is a QUICK lil' campfire you can whip up in half an hour or less, and best of all it's almost FREE!

YOU WILL NEED:

Wrapping paper, paper towel tubes (or toilet paper tubes): 5 or 6 lengths that are half the width of the fire you want to make and several (6 or 7) smaller-cut circles.

Paper (a few shades of yellow and a light orange work best) that is crumpled and gathered at the center of each piece, hot glue gun/gluesticks, scissors (optional)

STEP ONE: Glue the sides of your long tubes together at one end and fan out so that they look like spokes--it's more sturdy if you also glue a smaller circle in the middle of it.

STEP TWO: Glue the small circles in between each long tube at the center.  This not only gives it a little more sturdiness but also will come in handy for step 3.  :)

STEP THREE: Put a little hot glue in the inside of one of the small circle tubes and push the crumpled, gathered corner of a yellow paper inside of it.  Continue around, alternating shades of yellow.  In the center hole, stick at least three crumpled pieces of paper in it to make it a nice, full flame.

STEP FOUR: Cut out 3-4 orange flame shapes (you'll want them to be a little bigger than the rest of the fire, for a pleasing visual dimension) and stick them in between the yellow paper flames.  Depending on your purpose, you can glue them in or not.  (In this sharing time activity, I had stories/honesty case studies written on each orange flame that they could pick out to read, so they were removable.  If I were making this for a child's plaything, I'd glue them in for sure.  In my classroom, I might have review questions, songs, morning meeting prompts, writer/reader response questions, etc. on the flames and have them removeable.)

STEP FIVE: Gather around your lil' campfire and tell stories, sing songs, and share good conversation!
Sharing pioneer stories around the campfire with our senior primary :)
Got the idea and the stories/case studies HERE.
I love this lil' campfire TONS and I can't wait to use it in my someday-classroom as well!  :)  Happy camping!

Banana Ice Cream and Other Marvels

I finally gave the frozen banana-turned-ice cream a whirl last night.  It was MAGICAL.
And, because everything looks cooler as an instagram photo:
You literally just slice and freeze bananas for a few hours (4 bananas gave us 3 heaping servings of ice cream), then blend them.  It starts off crumbly, but then after a few minutes something magical happens and allasudden you have "ice cream."  Everyone said it would be more soft-serve in texture, but ours was definitely scoopable.  I don't even have a food processer, and our blender kinda DOESN'T rock, so I just used a hand mixer, scraping the sides as I went along.  Other than stray banana chunks that dive-bombed my head as I mixed, it turned out great!  Next up, I'm gonna try adding in some PB and cocoa powder for some chocolate-pb-banana yumminess.

In other family happenings, we got a bunch of old clothes from my mom to look through--this was my "keep" pile, but I guess it was Obi's, too--she took to it right away and built herself a little nest.  :)

She's so cute.

We finally have some RAIN!  I took the dogs out in it, which they didn't love me for, but I still made them stay out for a few minutes as I did a little happy dance in it anyway.  This is the first REAL rain we've had in MONTHS.  I'm thrilled.  Puppies aren't.  Poor puppies.  But without the rain, poor farmers!  Which means a poor ALL of us soon, when food prices jump up due to the drought.  Seriously.  I splashed in puddles and was finally able to cross that off my summer bucket list.  :)

I took the mantle decor down.  It was just feeling too "busy" for my taste.  Now, with a large clock from my mother-in-law (the QUEEN of good garage sale deals!), it's simpler and makes a bit more of a statement to me--less REALLY IS more!  It's the only part of the home I feel semi-satisfied with, decorating-wise.  I'd like it even better if we painted the walls.  :)
Yup, some beige or pale green paint on that wall and some wood in that firewood holder, and a fire in that fireplace, and I'll be in heaven.  :)

Otherwise, not much is going on.  My life is really boring right now, which normally would be a GOOD thing.  But I've just been a little down and discouraged and sick of WAITING and it's been weird to be in a place where GOOD doesn't mean NOT BAD anymore.  Does that make sense?  I'm working on journaling more, to work through all this negative emotion and really just changes, which is partly why you're not getting as much of ME in this blog right now.  Otherwise, things are okay.  I'm really looking forward to school starting so I can work again...too much time on my hands leads to too much introspection, which leads to an unhappy Celeste.  I'm looking forward to other marvels yet to be.

Faux Bubblegum Machine...with a purpose!

Remember this awesome faux gumball machine my BFF Linds made me?
(A tutorial can be found HERE)

Well, after we ate all that sugary candy fruit, we filled it with 7 pounds of M&Ms.
(1/2 gone...)

And then ate it ALL.

In a week.

And then it sat for a few months, empty.  The problem with this is that I wanted to either (A) fill it with candy and eat, fill and eat, rinse and repeat, which would NOT help me lose weight, or (B) fill it with gumballs--which I don't even like, honestly.  So candy sitting for months in the "machine" didn't bode well with me, either.  And keeping it empty did no good and was a waste of a perfectly beautiful birthday gift.

Well, I FINALLY got inspired.  That's the first time in a WHILE, craft-wise, so as soon as I thought through the details I went right to WalMart and bought 4 dozen ping pong balls and a Sharpie.

Oh, the magic that happens with a Sharpie!  :)

So, I give you...my faux bubblegum machine centerpiece/conversation starter!

(Yeah, I should probably come up with a shorter name for it.)

ANYWAY, I just took those ping pong balls, and painted them in six different colors.  Conveniently, the ping pong balls fit right into my plastic painting palette, so I could easily paint and dry them one half at a time.

Then I used the Sharpie to write a different question on each one.  They actually normally sell colorful ping pong balls already, but WalMart was out of them and I was impatient...not to mention I already had the paint and the white ones were WAY cheaper.  48 questions, none too nostalgic so even kids can play along, to get conversation going around the dinner table.

You could modify this in a ton of ways, of course, which makes it even more fun.

AT HOME:
  • This could be your "boredom buster" jar.
  • You could write Sunday-appropriate activities on each ball and that could be your go-to place on the Sabbath.
  • You could write a different chore on each one and have the kiddos pick different jobs to do.
AT SCHOOL:
  • use these prompts as morning meeting starters
  • creative writing/journal prompts
  • reading response tasks
  • alternative assessment ideas listed on each one...like instead of a book report, do this...
  • "early finisher" tasks
  • alternative to the popsicle stick names/jars
  • use as a "prize box," with a different incentive/reward written on each one
The possibilities really are endless!  I'm so happy that I have found a use for this adorable faux gumball machine that won't interfere with my weight loss goals.  It is a TRUE CONVERSATION PIECE, and I am happy with the final result.  :)  I'm also happy to finally have something to show off, since I haven't had much of that lately.  Here's to good things to come!
